University Church Nursery School (UCNS) is a half-day, non-denominational preschool program for two- to four-year-olds, and is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Our Program
Preschool fosters the development of essential skills – those which are needed in everyday living, in relationships with other people, and in future school readiness. There is nothing about a child’s pre-school day that is “just play.” A child’s play is his/her work. It is the one way he/she has of making sense of the world and of developing emotionally, socially, intellectually and physically.
UCNS recognizes that parents want their children to be ready for kindergarten, both socially and academically. To achieve that balance, we strategically expose children to a wide variety of play opportunities in which pre-literacy, math, science, social/emotional, motor, and creative skills are embedded. This allows children to achieve the skills necessary for later schooling through everyday school activities and extension activities for use at home, while simultaneously developing the social and emotional skills that are required for future success. We believe our students and their families deserve the best of both worlds!
Through a combination of self-directed and teacher-guided experiences, our flexible but structured program helps children gain security, learn to value themselves, and improve their ability to work in a group. We recognize that children move through the stages of development and learning at their own paces. UCNS is committed to ensuring that the minds and hearts of children with all learning styles are stimulated and engaged each day they are in school.
Classes
We offer three classes at our school, each of which is staffed by a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. Please note the change in our hours for the 2011-2012 school year.
Prospective Students
We welcome and encourage parents who are interested in our school to visit our classrooms and take a tour to observe some typical daily activities. Please call our Director, Carole Trone, at (301) 422-1404 to request informational materials or to schedule a mutually convenient time for a visit. We look forward to meeting you, answering any questions you may have, and sharing with you why you’ll love our school.
Enrollment
Preference for enrollment in all classes is given to 1) children of University United Methodist Church members; 2) children already enrolled in the school; and 3) children whose siblings have attended the school. Open enrollment for the general public begins on January 23, 2013. Children must reach the age of entry by September 1, 2013.
Open House Schedule
January 26 (SNOW DATE February 2): 10:00 – noon, Weekend Open House
Tour the school, meet the teachers, and have the opportunity to ask questions of current UCNS parents.
January 24, January 30 & February 1 (SNOW DATE February 8): 9:30 - 11:00, Drop-in Open Houses during school hours
NOTE: Join us for a brief visit during the school day. While you will be able to see each classroom "in action", the teachers will not be available for lengthy one-on-one interaction while teaching.
*Inclement Weather Notice*:
If the Prince George's County Schools (PGCPS) cancel morning weekend activities on January 26th, then our Open House will be rescheduled for February 2 from 10:00 to noon.
If school is delayed one hour on January 24, January 30, or February 1, our Daytime Open House will also be delayed one hour. If school is delayed 2 hours OR closed, our Open House for that day will be cancelled.
2012 – 2013 Calendar, Tuition, and Fees
First day of school: Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Calendar: UCNS follows the calendar of the Prince George's County Public Schools after opening day.
Registration fee: $70* per child - must accompany application for enrollment. *Refundable only if we are unable to offer the child placement in our program.
Annual tuition: divided into ten equal monthly installments as noted below. Need-based tuition reductions are available by application.
Snack/Supplies fee: $50 per child per year
