Pastor’s Small Group Class

Fellowship Opportunities

Hanging of the Greens (December 2)

It is time to adorn the church for the Advent season.  Everyone is invited to come out on December 2nd at 9:30 a.m. to hang the greens and set up the Chrismon tree.  This is a great time of fellowship and service, you don’t want to miss.  Who knows, maybe there will be Egg Nog, Hot Cider, and sweet treats?

Christmas Potluck and Sweets for our Sweeties at Home (December 10)

We are looking forward to sharing a delicious potluck meal on the second Sunday of December.  As we fellowship, we will sign cards and pack sweets for our sweeties who are no longer able to regularly attend UUMC.  If you are able, please bring a dish to share for the potluck.  We are also asking for homemade sweets and Christmas tins that can be delivered to our sweeties at home.  The ministerial staff is planning to do visitations on December 12th and 14th.

Christmas Carnival (December 10)

This is a community outreach event for families with young children.  We will have crafts, games, cookie decorating, and a photo booth.  The event will take place on Sunday, December 10th, at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  Please contact Daniella Furman Edwards for more information at drf25@georgetown.edu.

Annual Christmas Dinner (December 11)

You are cordially invited to be my guest at the Fourth Annual UUMC Christmas Dinner on December 11th at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall (gym).  A catered meal will be provided as we celebrate another year in the Lord.  Please confirm your attendance by returning the RSVP card found in the narthex.

Mission/Outreach Opportunities

(1)   Loaves and Fishes Café (December 17)

Each month, on the third Sunday, after 11 a.m. worship, we enter into a time of service as we share a hot meal with the community.  Volunteers are always welcome to visit with our guests, help serve, or assist in the kitchen.  Set up and clean up assistance is needed also.  Questions? Contact Ellen Brown (ellenmlb@yahoo.com), Susan Howley (howleyfam1@verizon.net), or Sarah Wakefield (sarahwakefield@hotmail.com).

(2)   Affordable Housing Mission Project

The Greater Washington District has been challenged to fund and support as many units of affordable housing as possible in our zip codes through The Rev. Adrienne Terry Fund for Affordable Housing.  Our UUMC goal is to raise $1300 (one month’s housing) during Advent.  Please place donations in an envelope marked “Affordable Housing Project” and place in the offering plate or mail to the church with a note indicating Affordable Housing.

(3)   Help-by-Phone Food Bank

We can “make a difference” in our community by continuing to support Help by Phone, Ltd.  Our eight food pantries, open five days a week, continue to meet needs of large numbers of people who simply do not have enough food on any given day.  Pantries need the following canned or dried food donations in sealed containers to meet health department requirements.  Please confirm that the expiration dates have not passed.

grits                 pancake mix & syrup              baby food        beef stew        pudding & Jell-O

dry milk           coffee & tea                            cocoa              cold cereals     macaroni & cheese

rice                  peanut butter                           jelly                  tuna                 pork and beans

pasta               canned fruits & veggies          pasta sauce     oatmeal           soups

Donations can be placed in the wooden box in the narthex.

General Announcements

Staff Appreciation Gift

As the year comes to a close, we are asking the congregation to show their appreciation for the UUMC staff.  The church employees work very hard every day of the year to make sure that worship is a great experience, the office runs efficiently, and the building is in good shape.  We ask that you recognize the efforts of our paid staff by giving a donation for a staff holiday gift.  Please put your donations in the collection plate during worship with “staff gift” written on the check or envelope.  We will be accepting donations through December 18th.  Let’s thank our staff for all they have done over the past year.

Office Closed (December 22-January 1)

The church office will be closed December 22 – January 1 so that the office staff can enjoy time with family and friends.  The office email will be checked periodically.  Pastor Sherri will be on vacation.  Rev. Rochelle will be handling pastoral duties during her absence.  She can be reached at 240-350-2267 or randrews8566@students.wesleyseminary.edu.

2018 Calendars

Calendars are popping up everywhere, but you will be surprised that there are many people looking for 2018 calendars.  Feel free to take a calendar, if you need one, or leave a calendar, if you have more than you need.  You can find the calendars or leave calendars in the box in the main hallway.

Offering Envelopes

The 2018 offering envelopes will be available for pick up in the narthex.  Please look for them on the table with the calendars.

Profile Cards

If you have not completed an orange Profile Card, please do so at your earliest convenience. EVERYONE is being asked to submit a new profile card this year, so we can verify information for the church directory.  You can pick up a card from the narthex. Once completed, please place the card in the offering plate, give to an usher or Pastor Sherri, or place in Pastor Sherri’s mailbox across from the men’s restroom on the main level.  Thank you.

Mission Worksheets

The UUMC Mission/Vision Team wants to hear from you.  What is our mission as a body of faith?  What is God calling us to do?  The mission statement for University United Methodist Church is “to make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world 'by uniting the two so long divided--knowledge and vital faith'.”  What does this mean?  How are we living out our mission as a community of faith?  Please share your insight.  Mission Worksheets are located on the bookrack in the narthex.  Completed sheets can be placed in Pastor Sherri’s mailbox, given directly to her, or placed in the offering plate.
